The best sunscreen for travel isn’t one bottle, it’s a kit. Here’s exactly what we pack for tropical vacations after testing sunscreen across ten countries, overwater bungalows, family pool days, and long-haul flights. The reef safe options for ocean days, the reef friendly picks for resort pools, and the daily face SPF that actually prevents sun spots. Plus the simple three-bucket framework nobody explains.
If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.
The Edit: Three sunscreen buckets cover every tropical trip. Mineral reef safe (non-nano zinc oxide only) for ocean days near coral. Reef friendly chemical for pool days and resorts. Daily face SPF with PA++++ UVA rating for flights and everyday wear. Reef safe is required in Maui, Lanai, Big Island, Molokai, Palau, and Bonaire. Reef friendly meets Hawaii Act 104 for most destinations but is not strict reef safe. You do not need reef safe every day, only in the ocean. Top picks: MANDA, Raw Elements, Native Mineral, LIVE TINTED Hueguard, Sun Bum, Vacation Classic Whip, Kopari Sunglaze, Beekman Hello Sunshine. Hero product: Kopari Ultimate Glow SPF Vault, $250 for $336 value plus beach tote, new customer discounts stack.
| Bucket | When to Use | Top Picks |
|---|---|---|
| Reef Safe | Ocean, coral, snorkeling, Maui, French Polynesia | MANDA, Raw Elements, Native Mineral, Bare Republic Mineral, LIVE TINTED Hueguard |
| Reef Friendly | Pool, boat deck, resort beaches, daily travel | Sun Bum, Beekman Hello Sunshine, Vacation Classic Whip, Kopari Sunglaze |
| Daily Face SPF | Flights, errands, everyday anti-aging | Beekman Milk Tint, Pastels Shop, Kopari Sun Veil |
Someone from the sailing community came for me on Instagram last year over a Beekman 1802 skincare post. A Kindness Krew exclusive I was sharing. Travel essentials, skincare I actually use, nothing to do with sunscreen at all. And she came in publicly about reef safe, on a post that wasn’t even about reef safe.
Here’s the thing. I already knew the difference.
I’d been quietly thinking about this for a while because I was getting sun spots. A lot of them. And I’d watched what happens to women in the boating community who wear mineral-only reef safe sunscreen every single day on the water because they feel like they have to. Their skin does not look good. Within a couple of years it is rough and weathered. Mineral sunscreen doesn’t protect against the UVA rays that cause aging and dark spots the way chemical sunscreen does, and the women who only used mineral every day were paying for it in hyperpigmentation and premature aging. I didn’t want that.
So I’d already made the switch. On days we were actually going into the ocean near coral, we wore mineral reef safe sunscreen. On every other day, pool days, deck days, daily face SPF, long drives, running errands, I was using stronger broad spectrum chemical formulas because they actually did the job of protecting my skin. My sun spots started fading. I kept going.
The comment thread got a little heated. I kept it up because I’d rather be honest with our community than pretend it didn’t happen. I did more research after and it confirmed what I already knew. Reef safe is for the ocean. Full stop. You don’t need to wear it every day of your life. And honestly, if the chemicals in certain sunscreens are bad enough to damage coral, they’re probably not great for us either, which is why I stay away from the heavy-duty Neutrogena and Johnson drugstore formulas and try to pick brands that are actually putting thought into what they make.
This article is the running list. The sunscreen we use on ocean days, the sunscreen we use at the pool, the sunscreen for everyday face SPF, and the ones that just smell so good they make vacation feel like vacation. We have tested all of these across ten-plus countries, more resorts than I can count, and enough overwater bungalows to have very specific opinions. Here’s how to pack.
Three buckets. That’s all you need.
Reef safe only. That means mineral formulas with non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the only active ingredients. These sit on top of your skin and physically block UV instead of absorbing into your bloodstream and breaking down in seawater. Places like Maui, Lanai, the Big Island, parts of the Caribbean, French Polynesia, and Mexican cenotes either legally require this or are ecologically sensitive enough that you should self-regulate. Reef safe is more expensive, sometimes leaves a slight cast, and the water resistance isn’t always as strong. That’s the tradeoff and it’s worth it for the ocean.
Reef friendly works here. Reef friendly usually means the formula is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, the two chemical filters Hawaii banned in 2021. It is not the same as reef safe, but it is a meaningful step up from drugstore formulas and this is where most of the fun, great-smelling, photographable sunscreens live. This is also where we keep most of our collection because this is where we spend most of our time.
Wear what works for your skin and what you will actually reapply. Broad spectrum UVA protection is what prevents the wrinkles, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation that add up over years. A good daily SPF is one of the best anti-aging investments you can make. The chemical formulas generally outperform mineral for daily wear because they protect against UVA more effectively and they’re invisible under makeup. One thing people forget: you need sunscreen on the plane. An hour in the air is equivalent to about twenty minutes in a tanning bed. If you’re flying to your tropical destination with bare skin against a sunny window, that’s where half your tan is actually coming from.
These are the mineral formulas we reach for when we’re actually going into the water near coral. Non-nano zinc oxide, no chemical filters, safe for Hawaii, Palau, French Polynesia, and anywhere else you want to snorkel without guilt.
MANDA and Manda’s Organic Sun Cream is our number one. The formula uses Thanaka, a plant-derived sun protectant that’s been used across Southeast Asia for over 2,000 years, combined with non-nano zinc oxide. What makes it different is the texture. It feels like a luxury body lotion, glides on smoothly, and has a very slight warm golden tint from the Thanaka that blends in instead of leaving a chalky white cast.
The packaging is made from cane sugar and 100% recyclable materials, and the travel-size sun paste has a little mirror built into the cap. Small detail, but if you’ve ever tried to apply sunscreen on a boat with no mirror in sight, you get it.
Raw Elements has been in our kit since 2018 and it is the one we grab when we need serious mineral protection for long water days. Reef safe, broad spectrum, 90-minute water resistance, which matters when you’re actually in the ocean and not just next to it. The face stick has traveled with us to ten countries without fail.
Full honesty, the texture is thick. I call it cake-like because that’s exactly how it feels, and it’s not for everyone. But if you want the most protection with the least environmental impact, this is the one that delivers.
Native Mineral is the easy grab. Target carries it, it’s affordable, and the Coconut and Pineapple scent is genuinely one of the best smelling mineral sunscreens I’ve used. Note that Native also sells a chemical line, so make sure you grab the Mineral version if you’re heading into the ocean.
Non-nano zinc oxide at 20%, plus vitamin E, avocado oil, coconut oil, and sunflower seed oil. Vegan, cruelty-free, good for sensitive skin. Stateside, this is the one I keep stocked. Check out Native’s Coconut SPF here.
We found Bare Republic face sticks at a Walmart in La Paz, Mexico while prepping for our Sea of Cortez adventure. Grabbed them out of necessity, kept reordering them for over a year. They go on smooth without that chalky mineral feel that puts most people off.
Titanium dioxide and zinc dioxide actives, water resistant, and compact enough to throw in a tote. It’s the best travel-size mineral face option I’ve found. Coola also makes a Mineral Face Sunscreen with a sheer matte finish that works nicely under makeup, if you want a slightly more polished option from the same founder.
This one was gifted to us through ShopMy and I haven’t tested it yet, but I accepted it because the brand story actually matters. LIVE TINTED was founded by Deepica Mutyala, an Indian-American creator who spent two years in labs specifically developing a mineral sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast on deep skin tones.
The result is non-nano zinc oxide at 9.5%, thirteen shade options, and a formula that functions as a moisturizer, sunscreen, and tinted coverage in one step. Reef safe, fragrance free, and FSA eligible. This is on my list to test when we get to Oahu and I’ll update this section with a real review. Check out the hueguard skin tint here.
These are oxybenzone and octinoxate free but still chemical formulas. Not for snorkeling near coral, perfect for everything else.
If you’ve stayed at a tropical resort, you’ve seen Sun Bum. There’s a reason. The scent is genuinely one of the best in sunscreen. It absorbs without feeling greasy. It’s oxybenzone and octinoxate free and dermatologist-tested. It’s the sunscreen of people who want to actually enjoy putting sunscreen on, which is most of us.
Sun Bum is transparent that this formula is not legal on Maui, Lanai, the Big Island, or Molokai, where mineral-only is required by law. For those islands, they make a separate mineral line. But for the majority of tropical destinations that aren’t strictly regulated, this is a reliable pick.
Beekman is what I’d tell any friend to try if they want a goat-milk-based SPF that actually absorbs. Hello Sunshine is broad spectrum SPF 50 with a PA++++ UVA rating, which means maximum protection against the UVA rays that cause aging, hyperpigmentation, and sun spots. That PA++++ rating matters enormously if you have melanin-rich skin that’s prone to dark spots.
Worth knowing: the SPF 50 version contains octocrylene in addition to zinc oxide, so while it’s Hawaii Act 104 compliant and oxybenzone and octinoxate free, it’s technically reef friendly rather than strict reef safe. For true reef safe from Beekman, look at their Milk Tint SPF 43 or Milk Primer SPF 35, which are mineral-only formulas.
The newer addition to Beekman’s SPF lineup and it’s different. Where Hello Sunshine is mineral, Solar Milk Clear is chemical, so it’s reef friendly rather than reef safe.
What makes it stand out is the completely invisible gel finish, PA++++ UVA rating, and a formula that doubles as a makeup primer. Goat milk, coconut milk, and rice milk base, plus pink algae extract. Works especially well on oily or combination skin. This is a daily wear and travel days pick, not an ocean days pick.
For the girls who skip sunscreen in favor of wearing makeup, this is your answer. The Milk Tint is a tinted concealer-infused sunscreen that leaves skin looking glowy and even. It works as primer under foundation or as standalone light coverage.
This has become a daily staple in my routine and it’s the one I reach for on travel days when I want to look put together without a full beat.
For sensitive noses and anyone who hates the smell of sunscreen. Coola’s fragrance-free mist is easy to reapply, 70% organic ingredients, no scent.
Reef friendly and great for layering throughout the day if you’re out for hours.
This is the category where I keep most of our collection. These brands figured out that sunscreen doesn’t have to feel like a chore. It can smell incredible, look beautiful in photos, and make the whole ritual of vacation prep feel elevated.
Vacation is doing something nobody else is doing, which is making SPF an actual sensory experience. Perfumer-developed scents, packaging that looks like it belongs in a 1980s travel magazine, and a vibe that makes applying sunscreen feel like the start of the day instead of an obligation.
All Vacation products are oxybenzone and octinoxate free and vegan. They are chemical formulas, so these are pool and resort picks, not coral picks.
Classic Whip SPF 30 and SPF 50 is the one everyone talks about. It literally comes out of the can as whipped cream. Star-shaped peaks, a scent called Poolside that smells like coconut and actual swimming pool, and enough viral fame that Kim Kardashian has called it her favorite. The Fragrance Foundation gave the scent Indie Fragrance of the Year. It’s impossible not to have fun putting this on.
Chardonnay Oil SPF 30 is packaged like a tiny wine bottle and contains actual cold-pressed Chardonnay grape seed oil from the Champagne region of France. The scent is called Grand Cru ’86 and smells like a yacht deck at sunset. This is my Bora Bora sunscreen. Not water resistant, so I pair it with a water-resistant base on swim days, but for a deck morning with a coffee and a view? Nothing better.
Classic Spray SPF 50 is the workhorse. Easy to apply on kids and the parts of your back you can’t reach. Broad spectrum, 80-minute water resistant.
Instant Vacation Bronzing Lotion SPF 30 is the throwback tanning lotion you grew up with, but with real broad spectrum protection. Buildable color, that signature Vacation scent, and it gives you a glow without sun damage. Used this one on deck in New Caledonia and it’s exactly what I wanted.
Classic Whip Glow SPF 30 adds subtle shimmer to the original Whip formula. Same fun application, extra radiance.
Kopari is the brand that makes every shelf it sits on look better. Rose gold packaging, a signature coconut milk scent, and formulas that are genuinely as beautiful as the bottles. I’ve been photographing Kopari products in Bora Bora because they’re styled so perfectly they work as props in the shot.
This is another pool and resort brand, chemical formulas throughout most of the line, with one standout mineral product.
Sunglaze Sheer Body Mist SPF 42 and Sun Shield SPF 42 are the two I use the most. The Sunglaze is a shimmering rose gold mist that dries fast, doesn’t leave a sticky residue, and gives skin that glazed donut finish everyone was obsessed with. I photographed it next to a fresh coconut at our motu in Bora Bora and the styling basically did itself. Both are chemical formulas so they’re for pool days and deck days.
Sun Shield On-The-Glow Sheer Stick SPF 40 is the reapply grab. Compact, goes on clear, perfect for faces and shoulders when you’re out all day.
Sun Veil SPF 30 Illuminator and Brush Set is the exception in the Kopari lineup because it’s actually a mineral formula with zinc oxide at over 19%. Pressed powder in a magnetic compact with a full-size kabuki brush. I treat this one as the top-coat layer: apply regular SPF first, then sweep this over cheekbones, collarbones, and shoulders. The glow is unreal. This is the product from the Kopari vault I’m most excited to use.
Kopari Glow This Way SPF Face Kit is a good intro to the face line, and the Sun Voyage SPF Travel Kit is pre-sized for TSA with the Body Glow, Sheer Stick, and Sunglaze Mist all under 3.4 oz.
Found this one on TikTok and bought it the same day. The scent has a cult following. The shimmer finish is stunning, and the pump spray is TSA-friendly at 3 oz.
Rio Radiance SPF 50 Body Oil Is a chemical sunscreen so not for coral, but for resort pool days and golden hour photos on the beach it is unmatched. Reminiscent of the tanning oils we grew up with, but with actual broad spectrum protection.
Amanda found this one in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, looking for a face sunscreen that was weightless enough to layer under makeup. Drugstores in Asia carry face SPF options that are years ahead of what’s on US shelves, because the formulation standards are different.
Prebiotics and succinic acid for blemishes and dark spots, completely invisible finish, held up well for sensitive skin. Linked here is a similar US option since the original isn’t easy to get stateside.
Skylar is a clean fragrance brand and this is their first foray into SPF. The scent is their Boardwalk Delight fragrance, which reviewers describe as summer cotton candy meets coconut milk meets boardwalk. SPF 30 with copper peptides and red algae built in for actual skincare benefit.
Skylar Boardwalk Delight Scent Screen Mist SPF 30 is a chemical formula and it can’t ship to Hawaii because of the aerosol, so it’s firmly in the pool-and-resort category. Haven’t tried it yet, but the concept of a perfume brand solving the SPF problem is enough to have me watching. Buying it when we’re back stateside.
The most effective sun protection doesn’t come out of a bottle. On long sailing days, long beach days with the kids, and any time I know reapplying is going to be inconvenient, I reach for UPF clothing first.
Hats, buffs, long-sleeve swim tops, and shorts with a UPF rating of 30 or higher take care of most of the reapplication problem while being gentler on sensitive skin and on the ocean. If you have allergies or sensitivities to sunscreen ingredients, UPF clothing isn’t a compromise. It’s the better option.
The Kopari Ultimate Glow SPF Vault is the one I just ordered. It’s $250 for $336 worth of product and it includes essentially everything I love from the Kopari line: the Sunglaze Body Gel Cream, Rose Gold and Golden Sunglaze Body Mists, Sun Shield, the Sun Veil Illuminator, the kabuki brush, and the striped beach tote you’ve probably seen on our feed.
If you’ve been wanting to try Kopari but weren’t sure where to start, this is the move. Especially when new customer discounts stack on top of the sale price (currently an additional 30% off), which is how I ended up paying a wild amount less than retail and still getting the tote & Free travel size gift bag with an additonal 5 products.
If you take nothing else from this post, take this. Bring mineral reef safe sunscreen for actual ocean days near coral. Bring a reef friendly chemical sunscreen for pool days and daily wear. Bring a daily face SPF that you’ll actually reapply. Bring UPF clothing for long exposure days. That’s the whole kit.
And buy the ones you think are pretty and smell good. Sunscreen you actually want to put on is sunscreen that actually gets put on. That’s the best sunscreen for travel.
