The Edit: Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa family travel guide from a retired Air Force family of four who have stayed at Aulani twice on the Aulani military discount rate and flew to Oahu on military hops flights. Aulani sits on the Ko Olina lagoons on the west side of Oahu, Hawaii. What to do at Aulani: Disney character meet and greets with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Stitch in Hawaiian outfits (resort guests only, short lines, offered several times a day), the Waikolohe Stream lazy river, water slides, Keiki Cove splash zone, Ka Maka Grotto, the Menehune Bridge water play area and an adults only pool, direct access to the Ko Olina beach lagoon for sandcastles and paddle boarding, Rainbow Reef saltwater snorkel lagoon with gear provided (ages 8 and up), Mickey ear shave ice at Papalua Shave Ice, the KA WA’A luau with open bar, buffet dinner and pre show lei making, ukulele and poi pounding, a design your own Mickey ears craft, Aunty’s Beach House supervised kids club, the free Menehune Adventure Trail scavenger hunt (allow an hour), and daily cultural activities listed in the Aulani Resort app, which change weekly. Wristband hack: pick up pool wristbands at the stands after 1 pm the day before to skip the morning line. Rooms: standard rooms (the military rate usually lands a parking lot view balcony, which is still fine), ocean view upgrades and kitchenette rooms for stays longer than 3 nights. Where to eat at Aulani: Ulu Cafe grab and go breakfast, AMA AMA four course ocean view dinner with live music and kids meals, Makahiki character breakfast buffet with Minnie and Goofy, Wailana Pool Bar, Mama’s Snack Stop and Papalua Shave Ice. Nearby: Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina for a sunset dinner (walk over along the beach), Ko Olina Center restaurants and Costco in Kapolei for groceries on the drive from the airport. Planning: dining and activity reservations fill fast so book early, Hawaii is on Hawaii Standard Time, rent a car or use TheBus, tip 15 to 20 percent. FAQ answers: you can visit Aulani without staying (dining, beach and some activities are open to the public), Aulani is not all inclusive, Aulani offers a military discount, and the resort works for all ages from toddlers to adults. Written by Amanda Dishman, USAF (Ret.), who has traveled full time with her family since 2018 and is based on Oahu.

Aloha! Our recent journey to Disney Aulani Resort & Spa was a dream and we’re thrilled to take you on a detailed tour of this incredible property.
The beauty of Disney Aulani extends beyond your hotel room. As an Aulani guest, you’ll discover the captivating sights on the resort property just by walking around.
You won’t miss the chance for a character meet here! Mickey, Minnie, and other favorite Disney characters decked out in Hawaiian attire are all over Aulani. These encounters are sprinkled throughout the property and promise unforgettable moments. The best part is that the lines to meet the characters go relatively quickly as this experience is offered multiple times a day and is only available to Aulani guests staying at the Hawaiian resort.

Aulani Disney resort boasts several pools, water slides, and a lazy river. Each pool area offers a unique experience. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or aquatic adventures, you’ll find the perfect pool. There’s the Adults-Only Pool, Keiki Cove, Waikolohe pool stream, Ka Maka Grotto, and the Menehune Bridge to check out.

The resort offers direct access to a stunning Hawaiian beach on part of the island of Oahu. Whether you’re building sandcastles with the little ones, taking leisurely strolls along the shoreline, or trying your hand at paddle boarding, the beach is your canvas for creating unforgettable moments.

Treat your taste buds to the iconic Hawaiian Shave Ice at Papalua Shave Ice. Customize it with Mickey mouse ears for that touch of Disney Magic.

Dive into the mesmerizing Rainbow Reef, Aulani’s saltwater lagoon. Snorkeling here is like embarking on an underwater adventure. The reef is teeming with colorful tropical fish, creating an enchanting viewing experience for all ages. Disney provides snorkeling gear with an experience to swim with the fish and explore this captivating world beneath the surface. This is for 8 years + though so Audrey just missed the opportunity to do it.

Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture with a visit to the KA WA’A luau at Disney’s Aulani resort. It’s one of the best things we did at Aulani with the kids. Enjoy delicious food, an open bar, and engaging cultural activities for the entire family.

The pre-show activities keep the kids busy and are super fun. Audrey and Addy loved learning how to play the ukulele and getting temporary tattoos. They even were able to make their own flower leis and try poi (Taro) after grinding it themselves.

The Lua had really good food options for the kids and the whole family enjoyed the buffet-style dinner.

Get creative and design your own Mickey ears. It’s a fantastic family bonding activity, and you’ll leave with personalized souvenirs.

This was Audrey’s Favorite Spot to hang out! They keep your kids busy with a room full of kids’ toys and crafts. If you’re not able to snag a time slot for your kids to enjoy Aunty’s beach house there’s also a free scavenger hunt to do! You’ll want to save at least an hour to do this as you’ll be going around the property finding all the locations Aunty sends you to.

Activities change weekly so you’ll definitely want to download the app to see what the resort is offering during your stay.
Disney Aulani Resort & Spa offers a ton of different room options. They’re all designed to provide maximum comfort and storage solutions that help the room to not feel overcrowded. We LOVE how Disney Resorts always take this into consideration. Let’s explore the key aspects of your stay:

If you want to stay in the military discounted room rate this is what you can expect in the standard tier. Below in the first video is the balcony view of the parking lot as described. The second video is a quick walkthrough of what the bathroom looks like.
Overall we enjoyed our Standard Room. The storage underneath the bed and the maid service leaving us little gifts made the stay with the kids feel fun & not feel overwhelming at all. We really were not in the room much. Although had we stayed longer than 3 days I think I would have opted for a Kitchen!
Disney Aulani Resort & Spa offers a great variety of dining options to satisfy every palate. From casual breakfasts at the Ulu Cafe to indulgent dinners at ‘AMA’AMA, there’s just a bunch of options on the property to keep everyone happy.
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Ulu Cafe. The menu boasts a variety of options to please both young and mature taste buds. Don’t miss the island-inspired specialties! We loved the grab-and-go concept of this cafe and our mornings for the most part started here.

Elevate your dining experience with a visit to Ama Ama. This four-course dining gem offers locally inspired dishes and unforgettable ocean views. Live music in the evenings sets the perfect tone for a romantic dinner. We took our kids and they enjoyed the fun kids meals made for them.
Check out the Vibe of the Restaurant, Drinks & kids meals at the Ama Ama restaurant.
Experience the Flavors of Hawaii at a Character Breakfast. Makahiki is where Disney Aulani’s culinary artistry shines. This enchanting buffet-style restaurant offers a journey through Hawaiian and American cuisine. There are more opportunities to interact with Characters here too like Minnie Mouse and Goofy.

Refreshing Poolside Dining. When it’s time to cool off and relax by the pool, Wailana Pool Bar is your go-to spot for refreshing drinks and light bites.

Tropical Treat at Papalua Shave Ice: When you’re craving a sweet and frosty treat Papalua Shave Ice is the answer! This charming shack offers an authentic Hawaiian experience.

Mama’s Snack Stop: Quick Bites on the Go. Mama’s Snack Shop is your one-stop-shop for satisfying quick bites while you’re on the move.
