We actually didn’t plan to stay at the Boutique Hôtel Kon Tiki Tahiti at all.
At the time, we were supposed to still be in New Zealand for another three weeks. But our Airbnb there canceled unexpectedly, which sent us scrambling to figure out our next move.
When we started looking at flights, we realized something surprising. It was actually cheaper to move our flight forward and fly to Tahiti early than it was to stay in New Zealand.
So within a matter of hours we completely changed our plans and flew Air New Zealand into Tahiti.
Luckily we already had our Airbnb in Bora Bora booked for the month, so we knew where we were headed next. The only challenge was figuring out where to stay for one night in Tahiti before making our way there.
Standing in the airport, I pulled up Booking.com and grabbed the last two rooms available at the Kon Tiki Tahiti.
I remembered seeing this hotel online a few years earlier when we first visited Tahiti and Moorea in 2023. It had looked beautiful and the location seemed perfect.
So we booked it right there in the airport.
The Kon Tiki is about a 10-minute drive from Tahiti’s international airport.
We had quite a bit of luggage, so we grabbed a taxi outside the terminal. Our ride cost about $20 USD, and the driver accepted both US dollars and French Polynesian francs.
The biggest reason we chose this hotel was its location.
It sits directly across the street from the ferry terminal, which made it incredibly easy for us since we planned to take the ferry the next day.
The surrounding area feels like what you would expect from downtown Papeete. It’s a busy port area with restaurants, shops, and ferry traffic.
But the moment you walk up to the hotel itself, the vibe changes.
There’s a beautiful mural on the wall with the Kon Tiki name across it, and it immediately feels modern and stylish.
Inside, the space opens up to a café area that has a food truck style kitchen and coffee bar. Everything felt very aesthetic and thoughtfully designed.
You can tell the hotel is fairly new.
Check-in was quick and very welcoming.
The staff member spoke great English and even offered us a complimentary welcome drink, which honestly surprised me since this isn’t a big resort hotel.
He walked me over to the café side and told the barista what I wanted. She made the drink right away and handed it over.
It was a small gesture, but after a chaotic travel day it felt really nice.
The hotel layout has two entrances. One side leads to the café and the other leads to the lobby and reception area. Inside they connect, so guests can easily move between both spaces.
The rooms are compact but really well designed.
Because we were traveling as a family, we booked two rooms, and the hotel placed them right across the hallway from each other.
The rooms we had were smaller budget rooms, but they still worked perfectly for a short stay.
Each room had:
The beds were extra-long twin size, and each bunk even had its own TV and lighting dial with different colored light options.
It was simple, but it worked. And once the lights were off, the room actually got really dark which made it easy to sleep.
Everything was clean and the air conditioning worked great, which is always important in Tahiti.
One thing to know ahead of time is that the bathroom layout is a little different from a typical hotel.
The restrooms are shared and set up more like what you might see in a gym or hostel.
The main restrooms are co-ed, while the showers are separated into men’s and women’s sections.
So if you’re traveling as a family, it just means the girls go to the women’s side and the boys go to the men’s side.
It wasn’t an issue for us, but it’s definitely something travelers should be aware of ahead of time.
Since this is a downtown hotel, it’s not going to be completely silent.
You can hear some movement in the hallway or nearby rooms if people are coming and going, but most of the activity happens in the restaurant or rooftop areas, not near the sleeping rooms.
For a short stopover or overnight stay, it really wasn’t an issue at all.
Near the rooms there’s also a nice outdoor lounge area where guests can relax.
There are comfortable seating areas, cold water available, and even complimentary coffee & tea.
It’s a great spot to sit for a while if you’re waiting for your ferry departure or just want to unwind after a long travel day.
One thing we didn’t expect when booking the Kon Tiki was how many food options were actually inside the property.
Between the ground floor café, the main restaurant upstairs, and the rooftop bar, there are several places to grab food or drinks without ever leaving the hotel. Everything is designed to flow together, so whether you’re arriving late, waiting for a ferry, or just want an easy meal after a travel day, there’s usually something open.
Each space has its own vibe too. The café downstairs feels casual and relaxed, the main restaurant upstairs is beautifully designed and family friendly, and the rooftop bar is the spot to hang out with views of the harbor and mountains.
Upstairs there’s a full restaurant and it’s honestly beautifully decorated.
The design feels modern and tropical without being overly fancy. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where travelers can grab dinner or drinks without feeling like they need to dress up.
While we were looking around, the owner actually stopped by and said hello, which was a nice touch.
One thing that stood out to me was that they also had a kid section with toys and play items, which made the restaurant feel very family friendly.
The rooftop bar is another great feature of the property.
From up there you can see views of the harbor and the mountains of Tahiti, which makes it a great place to hang out in the evening.
They serve drinks and even pizza, which makes it really convenient if you’re traveling with kids or just want something simple.
I liked how the whole property felt connected. Between the café, restaurant, rooftop bar, and lounge spaces, there’s always somewhere to grab food or a drink no matter what time you arrive.
The café at the Boutique Hôtel Kon Tiki Tahiti is actually one of the first things you notice when you walk in, and it’s much bigger than I expected.
Inside the café there’s a food truck style kitchen setup, which is where they prepare most of the food and drinks. The space itself is really well designed and beautifully decorated, with plenty of seating.
It felt like a mix between a real café and a casual restaurant, not just a quick coffee counter. There’s a full menu available, along with coffee drinks, and they also have “grab and go” items, bottled waters, and snacks, which is really convenient if you’re heading out early for a ferry or excursion.
The seating area is large enough that people were comfortably working on laptops or just hanging out, so it has a bit of that relaxed café workspace vibe too.
What I liked about the layout is that the café feels like its own space, but it still connects directly to the main hotel lobby and check-in area. So you can move easily between the two without it feeling separated from the rest of the property.
Everything in this area was also beautifully decorated, just like the rest of the hotel.
While we were there, the hotel was actually hosting a pop-up swimwear brand in the cafe area, which made the place feel very trendy.
It definitely attracts a younger crowd, but it still felt welcoming for families.
The best way I can describe it is that it feels like an upscale hostel mixed with a boutique hotel.
It has the social energy of a hostel, but it’s clean, modern, and much nicer than what people typically picture when they hear the word hostel.
Right before we checked out, we had a small fiasco that actually showed how helpful the staff were.
Alex tried to hand me my debit card, dropped it, and somehow it hit the floor in the exact worst way possible and slid straight under the bunk bed.
The girls’ bunks were open underneath so you could slide a suitcase underneath while open, but for some reason there was a tiny gap under ours.
The card disappeared under the frame where we couldn’t reach it.
We asked the front desk if there was any way to get it out, and they called maintenance.
The maintenance guy was actually prepared to take the entire bunk structure apart just to retrieve the card. At that point I felt terrible and told them not to go through all that trouble.
Even after we left, the staff emailed us later saying they had still tried to get it out.
It was such a small situation, but the fact that they even attempted to help after we checked out really impressed me.
The Kon Tiki’s biggest advantage is its location.
The ferry terminal is directly across the street, which makes it one of the easiest places to stay if you’re traveling between islands.
When it was time for us to leave, we simply walked across the street with our luggage and boarded our ferry to Bora Bora.
Our ferry departed around 8:00 PM, so we walked over around 7:30 PM and arrived with plenty of time.
If you’re looking for a luxury resort in Tahiti, this isn’t that.
But if you’re looking for a stylish, convenient, and budget friendly hotel in Papeete, the Kon Tiki Tahiti is a great option.
It’s especially ideal if you are:
For us, it worked perfectly during a chaotic travel day and made the transition to Bora Bora incredibly easy.
The easiest way I can describe it is this:
It has hostel energy, but in an upscale boutique hotel setting.
And honestly, it’s nicer than some hotels we’ve stayed at in the U.S.
