The Edit: This is an honest GORUCK review from a full time traveling family. It covers four pieces GORUCK gifted us through ShopMy: the Spy Ruck Women’s Weighted Vest in black at 8 pounds, GORUCK shoes (the Mackall All Terrain Rucking Shoes), the Training Leggings USA in Dark Sea Blue with pockets, and the Cropped Training Leggings USA in High Risk Red with pockets. Jason McCarthy, a 10th Special Forces Group veteran, and Emily McCarthy, who was with the CIA at the time, founded GORUCK in 2008. Moreover, the brand gives 1% of every dollar to those who serve. TIME named the Spy Ruck one of its Best Inventions of 2026. It comes in fixed 8, 12 and 16 pound weights filled with coated steel pellets, with a dual adjustable sliding sternum strap. Both leggings are made in the USA from ToughFlex nylon and spandex, with two side pockets and a reflective spearhead on the hem. GORUCK’s Mackall shoes have a 13 mm drop, a triple compound rubber outsole and a removable insert. The verdict: the Spy Ruck held up through more than 30 days of training hikes, and the leggings are keepers. The GORUCK shoes suit gym and lifting days better than long walks. There’s no public GORUCK promo code right now. However, GORUCK does offer an Earned Service Discount of 20% off full priced gear for eligible U.S. groups, verified through GovX. Buy direct at goruck.com. Written for women who want to add weight to their walks and hikes without hauling a full backpack.

GORUCK gifted this through ShopMy. Our opinions are our own.
Jason and Emily McCarthy started GORUCK in 2008. Jason served in the 10th Special Forces Group. Emily was with the CIA when the company began. According to GORUCK, they started it out of her house in West Africa with no business plan at all. Above all, they wanted a rucksack built to life or death standards, gear that worked anywhere from Baghdad to New York.
Today the line goes way past rucksacks. For example, there are weighted vests, shoes, leggings and tees, all built for training and staying active. GORUCK also gives 1% of every dollar to those who serve. On top of that, every piece is backed by the Scars Lifetime Guarantee. Because we’re a military family, that mission is a big reason we said yes to this gifting.
In addition, GORUCK runs rucking events, led by current and former Special Forces combat veterans. Think The GORUCK Challenge and the City Ruck Series. Alex especially loved that some events come with special patches you can only earn there. In his words, it’s a really good company to buy from and be associated with.
GORUCK gave us a gifting voucher so we could choose our own pieces. Everything we picked came from the women’s line, so this box was really for me. In the end, we chose the Spy Ruck, two pairs of GORUCK shoes and two pairs of leggings.
The women’s Spy Ruck comes in 8, 12 and 16 pounds. Initially, we went back and forth between 8 and 12. Alex already carries a camera backpack that’s around 40 pounds when it’s fully loaded. Since we didn’t want to overdo it, 8 pounds won.
Our box showed up fairly quickly. Each item came in its own bag with a sticker, and there was a lifetime warranty card inside. The packaging is simple, but GORUCK’s spearhead logo is everywhere, so you know exactly who it’s from. We also got a fun sticker with an I, a heart and a spearhead on it.
I’ll be honest, I don’t love hard exercise, so I’m not the toughest tester for a weighted vest. Even so, the Spy Ruck is comfortable. It’s a little tight over the chest, but it’s clearly made for women and it sits close to the body. Overall, I’d call it a solid, comfortable vest.
Alex is the one who really put this vest to work. Since July, he has worn it for 30 to 40 days of training hikes up a service road in Makaha Valley on Oahu. That road climbs at roughly a 10% grade. On his first two mile climb, he could feel the difference right away, because he’d done the same road the day before without the vest.
To him, it adds a little weight without being a crazy amount. As a result, he keeps building toward heavier days without trashing his knees and ankles. He also wears it instead of a backpack on short hikes. Better still, the vest never moved, slid or shifted on him. Plus, the open lower back gets far more airflow than a full pack, so his back isn’t soggy at the end.
Thirty plus days later, it’s stable, it still sits nicely, and it has a lot of salt buildup to show for it.
The pros are easy to list. It stays put, breathes better than a backpack, and adds light resistance you actually notice on a climb. Also, the GORUCK logos are reflective, which Alex tested with an LED light. Besides that, the buckle adjusts up and down and side to side. The thick bottom elastic is sewn, box stitched and sewn again, so it feels built to last.
On the downside, the weight is fixed, so you can’t swap it out to train at different loads. The straps that come under your arms felt weird to Alex at first because they push your arms out a little, though it didn’t bother him once he was hiking. It’s also built for smaller frames, so it fit him a bit wonky. Finally, it will get salty. GORUCK says to hand wash it in room temperature water with mild soap and hang it to air dry.
Planning a hike with a full pack instead? Here’s what we pack in a day hike backpack.
This is the one product that didn’t work for me. Within a few minutes, the arches in these GORUCK shoes were burning the bottoms of my feet. That happens to me in a lot of shoes, even Nikes, which I grew up wearing.
Next, I took the insert out, and that helped. The catch is that my foot then slid farther down in the shoe. As a result, it rubbed a raw spot on the back of my ankle where the top of the shoe meets it. My fix is tall socks instead of ankle socks, which covers that spot and makes them a lot better.
Similarly, GORUCK sent Addison a pair, and she had trouble breaking hers in. She took her GORUCK shoes with her to school and left her other shoes behind. In the end, I mailed her other shoes to her because these were so hard to break in.
Overall, I’d call them mediocre for my feet. Still, they’re beefy shoes, and they look like they’d be really good in the gym. GORUCK built these as all terrain rucking shoes, with a 13 mm drop and a triple compound rubber sole. For lifting and gym days, that sole makes sense. However, for long walks, hikes and jogs, I’ve had more comfortable shoes. Also, I’m not a fan of black, though they come in other colorways.
The Cropped Training Leggings are mine, and they’re so pretty. The red is bright and fun, and I especially like the pockets. The pocket version has two side pockets plus a reflective spearhead on the hem. Furthermore, GORUCK makes them in the USA from its ToughFlex fabric, with a 21 inch cropped inseam.
The full length Training Leggings in Dark Sea Blue went to Addison. She likes them, and she’s been wearing them since they arrived. Likewise, hers have the same pockets and reflective spearhead.
On the plus side, you get real pockets, great colors and made in USA construction. Honestly, the clothing line is my favorite part of what GORUCK sent. As for the downside, GORUCK’s product page doesn’t list official care instructions, so check the tag before you wash them.
Yes. GORUCK offers an Earned Service Discount of 20% off full priced gear and 15% off events. It’s open to eligible U.S. groups, and you verify through GovX right in GORUCK’s checkout.
However, the discount doesn’t apply to sale items, training programs or subscriptions. For more ways to save all year, here are the military travel discounts we use year round.
The Spy Ruck is for women who want a little extra weight on walks and hikes without a full backpack. Alex also sees it working for endurance runners. Instead of carrying gallons of water for weight that drains as you drink, you’d throw this on and carry a bottle in your hand. Additionally, he thinks it would be great for beach sprints and box jumps.
Skip the Spy Ruck if you want weight you can adjust, because it’s fixed. Likewise, skip GORUCK shoes for long walks if shoes tend to burn your arches like mine do.
For the clothing and the Spy Ruck, yes. Since we’re a traveling family that lives on the move, we want gear that earns its spot, and the vest earned it on Oahu. Alex says it’s a great addition to anyone’s workout gear. I also love the leggings and GORUCK’s mission. GORUCK shoes are the one piece I’d skip for long walks, but if you lift, they might be your shoe.

In our experience, yes for the Spy Ruck and the leggings. Alex has worn the vest on 30 to 40 training hikes, and it still sits stable. GORUCK shoes weren’t comfortable for my long walks.
Jason and Emily McCarthy founded GORUCK in 2008. Jason served in the 10th Special Forces Group, and Emily was with the CIA when the company started.
Some of it is. Both leggings we tried are made in the USA. GORUCK’s product page says the Mackall shoes are built in Vietnam.
For me, they were mediocre. The arches burned my feet within minutes. They’re beefy and look great for the gym and lifting, but I’ve had more comfortable shoes for long walks.

We chose 8 pounds. We wanted a light training weight, not a full backpack load. It comes in 8, 12 and 16 pounds.
No. The weight is fixed, so pick the one you want to train with.
GORUCK says to hand wash it in room temperature water with mild soap, then hang it to air dry. Ours gets a lot of salt buildup from Oahu hikes, so this comes up often.
