The Edit: This post is an honest, firsthand review of the Fringe Studio SE Standard Blush Notebook, gifted to Alex and Amanda through ShopMy along with a second blush notebook and the matching Desktop Notepad. Fringe Studio is a Southern California stationery brand and sister company to Punch Studio, known for original in-house art, and each notebook is 100 sheets of FSC Mix paper in a faux-leather cover. The verdict: well made and worth it for the quality, though a premium over drugstore notebooks. Their active 20% off promo code (verified active for October 2026) is SALTYVAGABONDS20. Written for college students, planners, and creators who want one nice notebook, not a cheap stack.

Paper isn’t dead, whatever the paper-is-dead crowd said a few years back. We plan content, run to-do lists, and send a kid to college on it. So when a Fringe box showed up, the real question was whether a pretty notebook could earn a spot in a life that’s always moving. Here’s our honest take.
Fringe Studio is a stationery and gift house based in Southern California, with company addresses in Culver City and Irvine. It’s a sister brand to Punch Studio, the long-running gift and stationery company under Todd Kirshner. You may have seen the name spelled or misheard as “French Studio,” but Fringe is the one on the label. The brand doesn’t publish a tidy founding year, so we’re not going to make one up.
The whole point of Fringe is the art. Their designs come from in-house artists, plus collaborations with creators like Morgan Harper Nichols, Martha Rich, Megan Galante, and Juliana Tipton. Their own words sum it up well: take the paths not always taken, look for art in unexpected places, and spread joy. That shows up in the covers, which look more like something off a boutique shelf than a school supply aisle.
The notebook is made with FSC Mix certified paper, marked FSC C190193 on the back. Here’s what that label actually means. FSC is the Forest Stewardship Council. FSC Mix means the paper is a blend of certified-forest fiber, recycled content, or wood that meets a baseline responsible-sourcing standard. It’s a real sourcing signal. It’s not the same as “100% recycled,” and we’re only telling you what the label says, not making an eco promise on the brand’s behalf.
This is where Fringe earns its keep, and it’s about more than how it looks in a photo. The cover is a soft, faux-leather pebbled finish in a pretty blush pink, with the title in gold foil. It’s cute and girly in the best way. It feels well made the second you pick it up. The gold twin-ring binding is chunky and squared off, not the flimsy coil you snag on everything.
Inside the front there’s a double-sided pocket, the small touch that makes it feel like a real notebook and not a pad. The paper itself feels premium too. The pages are noticeably thicker and more substantial than the thin sheets in a standard Mead or Five Star notebook, which is a big part of why the whole thing feels a step up.
Here’s the part I didn’t expect to care about. It just makes you feel good to use. Reaching for something this pretty puts me in a better headspace than opening one more plain black notebook. That sounds small. But when a notebook is nice to look at and nice to hold, you actually want to open it. And the things you need to write down actually get written down. For me, that little lift is part of the value, not a throwaway detail.
Our oldest, Addison, took a couple of these to college this year for her classes. Both Alex and I went through college too, so we know the drill: five classes, a stack of notebooks, and a brain running on not enough sleep. A notebook that feels good to open actually gets used, and one you’re a little proud of tends to stay neat. That’s the honest case for spending more on a school notebook. It’s not magic. It just gets picked up more.
For us, these live in the planning-and-content lane. We use them for content ideas, to-do lists, and the running list of things you need to write down the second they hit you. I’ll say it plainly, as my own opinion and not science: writing by hand keeps it in my head better than a note buried in my phone. And planning our next stop in something this pretty makes the work feel a little less like work. When you’re always on the move, one good notebook you actually reach for beats ten half-used ones.
Alex is our pilot, and back in flight training he kept his notebooks color-coded through the whole program. Blue covers were for his flying and dispatch courses. Green and white were for meteorology. When you’re carrying five or more, you learn to grab by color without even reading the spine. It takes the guesswork out, both when you’re running to class and when you’re studying at the table later.
This is exactly why the color range matters. The Signature Edition line comes in more than blush. There’s black, sage, and a tomato red, so you can run a real system: one color per class, per project, or per kid. If you like the idea of a matched, pretty stack instead of a random pile, this is the notebook that lets you do it on purpose.
If you carry one notebook, color doesn’t matter much. If you carry a stack, it changes your whole week. Students juggling subjects, planners running work and home, and creators sorting ideas from to-dos all get something out of picking a color and sticking to it.
Here’s the real objection, and we’re not going to dodge it. Priced by the sheet, Fringe is the premium pick, and it isn’t close. After our code, a Fringe notebook works out to somewhere around 17 to 18 cents a sheet. A comparable single notebook from the drugstore lands closer to 5 to 7 cents a sheet. In a multipack it drops to just a few cents each.
So you’re paying roughly three times more per sheet, and more than that against a bulk pack. This is not the budget buy, full stop. The price is the thing most people will pause on, and they should.
We went looking for a fair one-to-one match and it’s genuinely hard to find. Once you want a lined, single, 100-sheet notebook of this size and this quality, the big-box brands mostly give you composition books, graph paper, or plastic-cover multipacks. Those aren’t the same thing.
The Fringe paper feels premium and noticeably thicker than the thin sheets in those notebooks, and you’re also paying for the cover, the pocket, and the look. So the honest read isn’t that Fringe is an overpriced Mead. It’s that Fringe is playing a different game than the drugstore shelf.
Want the budget route for a full stack instead? Here’s our roundup of the cutest back to school composition notebooks.
Full transparency on the gaps. We haven’t run one of these through a whole semester yet, so I can’t speak to how the cover and binding hold up after months of daily abuse in a backpack. I also haven’t stress-tested the paper with heavy fountain pen ink for ghosting or bleed. When we’ve put in that time, I’ll update this post with what we find.
Quick note for accuracy: Mead and Five Star are the same company, both under ACCO Brands, so that’s really one tier, not two. Their play is volume and disposability. You get plenty of paper for very little money, in packs meant to be filled and tossed. If that’s what you need for a heavy semester, that’s a smart buy, and there’s no shame in it.
Five Star does make a recycled notebook, and on paper it’s the greener product. It lists recycled sheets, a recycled plastic cover, recycled wire, and it’s recyclable, with SFI certified paper. That’s a different certification than Fringe’s FSC, not a missing one. So if your top priority is environmental footprint, that recycled Five Star is honestly the one to look at, not the Fringe.
These are two different definitions of “better notebook.” Five Star recycled is the budget, eco, built-to-get-wrecked pick. Fringe is the keepsake pick: nicer to hold, nicer to photograph, and one you buy to keep. Different buyer, different win. We’d rather point you to the right one than pretend Fringe beats everything.
The surest place to buy is straight from fringestudio.com, which ships within the US. Add the SE Standard Blush Notebook, or pick your colors from the Signature Edition line, and apply SALTYVAGABONDS20 for 20% off at checkout.
Yes. The active Fringe Studio promo code is SALTYVAGABONDS20, which gives you 20% off your order at fringestudio.com. It’s verified working for October 2026 on the Signature Edition notebooks. It also lives on our discount codes page.
Same answer, since people search it both ways. The code is SALTYVAGABONDS20 for 20% off, and you paste it into the discount box at checkout on fringestudio.com.
Not one that we could find on their site, so I won’t promise one. We’re a veteran-owned brand, though, and our code SALTYVAGABONDS20 gives everyone 20% off, military or not.
Honestly, it depends on what you want. If you need cheap and plentiful, they’re not it. If you want one well-made notebook that photographs well and you’ll actually keep, in my experience they’re worth the extra few dollars.
The notebook is made in Korea and designed by Fringe Studio in Southern California. The FSC Mix paper certification is printed on the back.
It’s 100 sheets, which is 200 lined pages, at 7.25 by 9.75 inches. One small thing I noticed: the pages aren’t numbered, so there’s no page count printed at the bottom.
The Signature Edition line goes beyond blush. I’ve seen black, sage, and a tomato red, which makes it easy to color-code a stack by class or project.
For everyday pens and gel pens it’s held up well for us. I haven’t fully stress-tested heavy fountain pen ink yet for ghosting, so I’ll update this once I have.
Yes, for the right reason. As a full-time traveling family that plans everything on the go, and with a kid off at college, we wanted one notebook worth carrying instead of a drawer of half-used ones, and this is that notebook. It’s well made, it’s genuinely pretty, and it gives me a small lift every time I open it. It photographs beautifully, and the color range lets us run a real system across classes and projects. Just go in knowing it’s a premium buy, not a budget one, and that there are no printed page numbers.
I’ll update this post after a full semester of daily use and a proper fountain pen test, so check back for that. If you’re going to try them, use code SALTYVAGABONDS20 for 20% off at fringestudio.com. Check our discount codes page for the rest. And if you’d rather go the cute-and-cheap route for a stack, here’s our roundup of the cutest back to school composition notebooks instead.
