The Fuerte de San Felipe de Bacalar was such a fun and educational stop during our time in Bacalar México. I recommend going in the morning before it gets too hot, then cooling off at a beach club or by the pool during the warmest part of the day. When is The Fort of San Felipe Bacalar Open and How Much Does it Cost?
Since the fort is now a museme run by the Institute of Culture and Arts of Quintana Roo, it’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (closed Mondays). It’s a great spot to explore, especially on Wednesdays when the lake is closed to all boat traffic.
I have listed the costs below:
Foreigners $110 pesos
General admission $55 pesos
Teachers, students, children $30 pesos
What’s in the Museum?
Built during the golden age of Caribbean piracy and completed in 1733, the fort was designed to protect the region from pirate attacks. The museum inside has information boards that dive into the fort’s fascinating history.
The museum showcases pirate artifacts and explains the Spanish trade routes in the area. Don’t miss the human bones displayed under glass! From Spanish forts in Guam to Mexico, you’ll be amazed at the vast empire they built during their reign.
