Saltyvagabonds
The best way to experience Bacalar’s stunning “Lagoon of Seven Colors” is by boat. The lagoon is massive, making it tough to explore every spot by paddleboard or kayak. For a full tour, a private pontoon ride with Delu Travel Tours is ideal!
What Types of Tours do They Offer?
Delu Travel Tours offers two options for exploring Bacalar Lagoon: a 3.5-hour or a 5-hour private tour on a well-equipped pontoon boat. They have two boats, docked privately just a few properties down from the Khaban Hotel, for an exclusive experience on the lake

How Much do the Tours Cost?
Delu Travel Tours offers personalized Bacalar Lagoon tours, with a 3.5-hour tour for 5 people at 5,880 MXN, plus 900 MXN per additional guest.
For a longer adventure, their 5-hour tour is available for 7,100 MXN with drinks, fruit, and beer included. Check out their website for more details here.
How Reliable is Delu Travel tours?
The captain and his wife arrived a few minutes early and greeted us warmly. Throughout the tour, the boat ran smoothly with no issues, so we had zero worries about getting stranded on the water. Plus, with plenty of boats around, a quick tow is always an option if needed! Another tour we took was the Wild water sailboat tour on the Bacalar lake, check out this review on it for more!
Did they have food or snacks?
One thing’s for sure, Mexicans know how to make a tour delicious! Most tours include snacks, drinks, or even full meals, and our Delu tour was no different.
We scheduled our pickup for 9:30 a.m. to catch the morning light, and Delu came prepared with a huge fruit plate, soda, water, and beer. The fresh fruit was cut up right on the boat by the captain’s wife while we enjoyed a swim at one of our stops—such a treat!
How Did Our Tour go and is it What We Expected?
Our tour with Delu, arranged through Khaban Hotel, was amazing, and we’re so glad we booked it. The whole experience had this warm, family-like vibe that you just don’t get with other tours.
The husband and wife team speak minimal English, but the captain used the boat’s audio system and a translation app to share great information about Bacalar Lake.
He explained things like the stromatolites and where the lake’s blue color comes from. This tour gave us a unique personal experience with a local and a fresh perspective of the lake. We also got to experience Cenote Cocalitos and its impressive stromatolite formations.
Another stop on the tour was the Canal de los Piratas, also known as the Pirates Channel. The story goes that this channel was originally dug by the Mayans to help with irrigation for farming.
Today, the Pirates’ Channel is famous because a restaurant owner once tried to build and run a restaurant shaped like a boat. It’s been abandoned since then, and now nature is slowly taking it back.
Are They Accommodating When Taking Photos and Using an Aerial Drone?
They were super accommodating—within reason, of course! We spent extra time at Pirate’s Canal to get the shots we wanted, and the captain was happy to pause the boat whenever we needed for specific photos.
What else to do in Bacalar
We spent months in Bacalar and not only did we find the best places to eat, but we also found the best places to stay! Check out this blog post for more info on the Bacalari Boutique hotel in Bacalar!
Should You Take Your Family on a Private Tour With Delu Travel Tours?
If you’re considering a Bacalar Lagoon tour, choose Delu Travel Tours—you won’t regret it! Opt for the 5-hour tour, as the 3.5-hour option may feel a bit short.. The owner is super friendly and shares some of the best insights about the lagoon.
They bring a warm, luxury-family vibe and really go out of their way to ensure you have a fantastic time. Communication isn’t a worry, they handle it all smoothly. Our experience? A solid 5 out of 5 stars! Perfect for family memories on the water!
