Bacalari Boutique Hotel Review (Adults Only)
I know what you’re thinking—where’s the family-friendly spot? Well, Bacalari Boutique Hotel is an adults-only oasis, located just down the street from Casa Hormiga. While we didn’t stay overnight, we opted for a short day visit to enjoy their pool and restaurant.
Things to See at Bacalari Boutique Hotel
The Boutique Pool
One of the standout features of Bacalari Boutique Hotel is its stunning infinity pool overlooking the Bacalar Lagoon. Catching the sunrise here is magical. You can expect to see pastel hues lighting up the clouds that create a picture-perfect moment you’ll never forget.
Though we didn’t stay overnight, the front desk kindly allowed us to enjoy the pool for a bit, giving us time to snap some content and soak in the serene view. We truly appreciated their hospitality—it’s these little gestures that make this place so special.
Places Close By You Must See
Muelle Público 36
Just a short stroll down the hill from the hotel’s front door, this public dock is a must-visit. It’s the perfect spot to meet locals, enjoy a peaceful sunrise, or take a refreshing swim in the lagoon. You’ll often find families here throughout the week, adding to its welcoming vibe.
Muelle Ecológico
For a small fee of 20 pesos, you can explore this ecological dock, which is beautifully maintained for everyone’s enjoyment. The dock winds through a forested area and shallow marsh, leading to the lagoon. Along the way, you’ll likely spot various fish species and birds, including the vibrant Roseate Spoonbill. And if you’re truly lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a toucan.
What Type of Rooms Does Bacalari Have?
Suite Doble (Double)
The most budget-friendly option, this room features two matrimonial (Mexican full-size) beds, slightly smaller than American full-size beds, and accommodates up to 4 people.
Located on the first floor, these rooms lack a lagoon view but include a private balcony with a hammock for relaxation. While at the pool or visiting someone on the second floor, you can still catch glimpses of the lagoon.
King Suite Partial Lagoon View
Designed for couples, this suite offers a spacious king bed and is priced higher than the double suite. Located on the second floor, each room comes with a rooftop balcony offering partial views of the Bacalar lagoon.
From my drone flights, the rooms on the north side (facing the road to the lagoon) have better views than those on the south side near the front desk, which may be obstructed by trees or buildings.
Master Suite Lagoon View
The crown jewel of Bacalari’s accommodations, this suite offers stunning lagoon views. With only two rooms available, these are located at the building’s end, facing the lagoon.
Like the King Suites, they feature a king bed, bathroom, and private plunge pool. However, the full lagoon view from the rooftop balcony makes it ideal for honeymoons or anniversaries, providing a breathtaking and intimate experience.
Where to Eat at Bacalari Boutique Hotel
Bacalari Boutique Hotel has an on-site restaurant, making it convenient for guests who don’t want to venture far for meals. During our visit, we stopped by for lunch but were informed the restaurant was fully booked for a private birthday party.
By chance, we met the birthday girl, who turned out to be incredibly friendly and from Texas. Though we didn’t get to try the food, the festive atmosphere and the hotel’s accommodating vibe made the experience memorable. If you plan to dine here, it might be worth checking ahead for availability!
Nearby Dining Options
Ruda
Just down the street from La Playita, Ruda offers a cozy, quaint café vibe with a charming atmosphere and a unique dining experience. Their small, rotating menu keeps things fresh and exciting, making it the perfect spot to try something new.
One standout dish is their turmeric and coconut milk curry, a flavorful option you won’t easily find elsewhere. Ruda caters to both vegetarians and meat lovers, ensuring a delicious meal no matter your preference. For us, restaurants with rotating menus always land in the “great restaurant” category—and Ruda is no exception!
The Best Time to Visit & Things to Know About Visiting Bacalari Boutique Hotel
The best time to visit Bacalari Boutique Hotel depends on your preferences and schedule. Bacalar’s busiest season runs from November to May, offering lower humidity and minimal rain. This is ideal if you prefer drier, cooler conditions.
We visited in September, during the rainy season, and still had an amazing time! Typically, rain showers occur in the afternoon, leaving the mornings clear for exploration and relaxation. With plenty of ways to cool off—whether at the public docks, local pools, or nearby cenotes—you’ll have an unforgettable experience no matter the season.
