Nobody paid me for this K18 AirWash dry shampoo review. K18 sent it through ShopMy with no script and no code, and I’m writing it because dry shampoo has been my biggest travel-bag frustration for eight years. I’m retired, so I get a check whether this post goes viral or not. That means I have no reason to tell you anything but what happened on my own roots.

What Is K18 Dry Shampoo?

If you only know K18 for the four-minute repair mask, AirWash is the product that surprised me most. It’s built differently from every other dry shampoo I’ve owned.

Not a powder, not an aerosol

Most dry shampoos are either a starch powder or a pressurized aerosol can. AirWash is neither. Instead, it’s a non-aerosol pump spray that comes out wet and clear. Then it dries in seconds and disappears. K18 launched it in March 2024 with a technology it calls odorBIND, which the brand says recognizes and neutralizes odor molecules rather than covering them with perfume. Oil control comes from clear silica microbeads, which are mineral based rather than plastic, plus a microalgae extract for the scalp.

Why that matters for dark hair

Powder dry shampoos leave white specks on dark hair because the powder itself is white. Since AirWash has no powder, there’s nothing to leave behind. That’s the whole reason it works on my very dark brown hair when tinted powders only half worked.

Made in the USA

My Hair and How I Tested It

Reviews are only useful if you know whose head they happened on. So here’s mine.

Dark, wavy, and untouched

My hair is very dark brown, dark enough that people call it black. It’s wavy, somewhere in the 2B to 2C range: it goes curly when wet, I can push it into real curls with product, and it blows out straight. More importantly for this review, I haven’t colored it or had a salon treatment in four years. The only things that touched it in that time were Innersense Organic Beauty shampoo and conditioner and a Primally Pure dry shampoo. In other words, a very controlled test.

Two heads, months of use

K18 gifted AirWash in the first round of products they sent, and I’ve used it for months now. For part of that time I shared the bottle with my oldest daughter, who has a genuinely oily scalp. She’s moved out since, so now it’s just me. Even after both of us using it regularly, more than half the bottle is still there.

How K18 AirWash Actually Performs

Here’s the part that made me want to write a whole post about a dry shampoo.

It melts in

You shake the bottle, hold it a few inches from your scalp, and spray. It lands wet and clear, which feels weird the first time. Then, within a few seconds, it’s gone. No powder to work through, no chalky feel, and nothing on your fingers. After that, you massage the roots a little and brush. My hair looks freshly washed, not just less oily.

No white cast, and I’ve looked

I’ve checked in daylight, in bathroom light, and in photos. Nothing. Interestingly, I’ve seen blondes and lighter brunettes on TikTok say they get a cast from it, so this may be a dark-hair advantage rather than a universal one. On my hair, it’s invisible.

Roots still clean two days later

This is the one that sold me. A couple of days after a wash, with one AirWash application, my roots still look like they don’t need anything. On my daughter’s oily scalp it pulled the grease out completely. The scent is light and clean, not the perfume cloud most dry shampoos leave behind, and it doesn’t linger.

Is K18 Dry Shampoo Damaging? What I Think About the “Ruined My Hair” Videos

If you’ve searched this product, you’ve seen them. Someone loves it, then a few weeks later they’re touching their hair on camera saying it’s falling out. I want to address that carefully, because I happen to be an unusually good test case.

What I ruled out

For four years, nothing touched my hair except Innersense and Primally Pure. No color, no salon, no hotel shampoo. We were living on a boat for part of it. So when my hair did start shedding badly, I wasn’t guessing about the cause. Nothing had changed except a new medication, and that shedding started before AirWash ever entered my routine. Then I kept using AirWash every few days through the whole shedding period. If it were making things worse, that’s exactly when I’d have seen it. Instead, the shedding eased when I started a different K18 product, the FutureIQ serum, while AirWash stayed in rotation.

The timing problem with those videos

One thing worth knowing: hair that’s about to shed usually entered its resting phase two or three months earlier. So someone who started a dry shampoo two weeks ago and is shedding today is very likely looking at something from the spring. It could be stress, a diet change, hormones, new vitamins, or a dozen other things. I’m not a doctor, and I’m not saying nobody has ever had a bad reaction. I’m saying that a two-week timeline doesn’t point at the dry shampoo.

What I actually noticed

My hair texture is unchanged after months of AirWash. By day two of an application my roots feel a bit drier than usual, and I’ll say that plainly. But the moment I wash, everything resets. Nothing about it is permanent. A stylist told me a few months ago it was the healthiest hair she’d seen come into her chair, and that was months into using this product. I’ve also had no allergic reaction or scalp irritation of any kind.

How to Use K18 AirWash Dry Shampoo Correctly

A lot of the complaints I’ve read sound like too much product. So here’s exactly what the bottle says and what I do.

The bottle’s directions

Shake well. Hold it four to six inches from the scalp. Start with one spray per section, and go up to three only if you need it. Then massage in and brush or style as usual. The label also says the non-aerosol format may feel slightly damp at first but won’t disturb your style, which matches my experience.

What I actually do

One spray, sometimes two, at the roots where I need it. That’s it. I don’t section my whole head. If your hair ever feels gritty or coated, you used too much. K18’s own guidance says the same thing. Less really is more here, and it’s also why the bottle lasts as long as it does.

What it’s for, and what it isn’t

AirWash is a boost between washes, not a way to skip washing for two weeks. I use it to stretch a wash day or two, and it does that beautifully. If you’re trying to go a week and a half without water, your roots are going to feel dry no matter what you spray on them.

Before AirWash, my favorite was Primally Pure’s tinted dry shampoo. Since I have dark hair, the brown version was great because it didn’t leave white specks. However, it’s a powder, so it was messy. It got on my hands, my sink, and my collar. AirWash does the same job without any of that, and it holds up longer between washes on my hair. Primally Pure is still a good clean option if you prefer a powder, but AirWash is the one that stays in my bag now.

Is K18 AirWash Worth the Money?

It costs more than a drugstore aerosol, so let me explain how I think about it.

Cost per use, not cost per bottle

I use one or two sprays at a time. After months of use on two heads, I have more than half a bottle left. On one head, I expect this bottle to last close to a year. That works out to a few dollars a month, which is less than the cheap aerosol you empty every few weeks and buy again. I’d rather pay more once for something that lasts and actually works.

Who should buy it

Anyone with dark hair who’s tired of white cast and anyone with an oily scalp, based on what it did for my daughter. Anyone who travels and wants a dry shampoo that isn’t a pressurized can. On the other hand, if you love the volume a powder gives you, this feels different. It cleans more than it lifts.
