I stopped counting my surgeries somewhere along the way, and swimwear stopped being kind to my body a while before that. Then Nani gifted us a mom and daughter try on haul, and for the first time in years I put on a two piece and felt like myself. Here is the honest breakdown of five suits on two real bodies, the fit notes no one else will tell you, and the discount that makes trying them easy.
If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.
The Edit: This is my honest Nani Swimwear try on haul, filmed as a mom and daughter review from Hawaii. My daughter Addison and I tested five gifted Nani suits together, three bikini sets on me as a midsize mom with abdominal surgery scars and hip damage, and two Stevie one pieces on Addison, so you can see how the brand fits across two very different body types. Nani gifted these suits through ShopMy. Our opinions are our own.
I have two kids and so many surgeries from my military service and deployment injuries that I stopped counting. When they wanted to send me in for one more, I said no. One more just was not worth it. I was ready to be left alone in the body I have now, which lives with daily pain and a set of scars I do not hide. You can see one of them above my belly button in the video, from a laparoscopic surgery.
Swimwear has not been kind to a body like mine. One of my earlier surgeries was botched, and my hips have never been the same. They stick out more than they should, with these weird little pockets on either side that no bikini I have ever tried has been able to smooth down without over correcting my stomach and making the whole thing look like a busted can of biscuits.
So when Nani Swimwear gifted us a spread through ShopMy, my daughter Addison and I sat down and made a whole afternoon of it. Mom and daughter, five suits, one video. I tried on the three bikini sets to answer the real question moms want answered: does this actually work on someone who does not look like a swim model. Addison tried on the two Stevie one pieces, so you could see how the same line fits a completely different body type.
@saltyvagabonds We got gifting on ShopMy from Nani Swimwear. Addison and I did a mom and daughter swimsuit try on haul and I finally feel like I found flattering swimsuits for moms that actually work on a real midsize body. I’m a size 14 with hips, a mom pouch, and an apron tummy, wearing XL here. Nani surprised me. Here’s what you need to know before you shop: What we tried on: Beach Break Flat Rib One Shoulder Crop + Yoga Pocket Bottom, Cardinal Flat Rib 4-Way Reversible Midkini, Poppy Flat Rib Tied Up Bottom, Vera Stevie One Piece, Rye Stevie One Piece, Marine Cut Back Crop, Marine Colorblock Bottom. The Flat Rib material is stretchy, thick, and forgiving. It smooths the tummy without squeezing you in half, which is the whole game when you’re shopping for swimwear for apron tummy, swimsuits for mom’s tummy, or the best two piece swimsuits for moms with bellies and real mom bodies. 🛍️ Nani is sold in person at REI and Dick’s Sporting Goods, so go try it on if you’re nervous about sizing. My tip: the online collection has way more prints and more of the full line, so shop online once you know your size. Order your usual, the material is that forgiving. 💸 Use code Saltyvagabonds15 for 15% off. It stacks on top of sales, doesn’t expire, and works whether you shop through my ShopMy, my LTK, or type the code straight into naniswimwear.com from Google. 📌 Save this for your next tropical vacation outfit haul and follow @saltyvagabonds we test resort wear and travel products so you don’t have to guess. What we found is a brand making swimsuits that let me feel feminine again while still functioning as a mom who chases her kids at the beach. If you have been searching for the best swimsuits for moms, modest swimsuits for moms, or something forgiving for a mom pouch, a mom’s tummy, or moms with bellies, this is a real, worn-it-myself answer. This is not a review for the outdoorsy surf girl. This is for the moms looking for coverage, confidence, and something that finally fits.
The Sailboat rope one piece Addison is wearing is from Anthropologie!
Nani makes swimsuits with coverage in mind, and that is the whole point. They have a video on Instagram that lines up a standard bathing suit next to theirs so you can see, side by side, exactly how much more skin their suits actually cover. It is the clearest visual I have found of what makes this line different from everything else on the market.
These are suits designed for women who want to move without adjusting, chase little kids without a wardrobe malfunction, and get in and out of the water without anything shifting where it should not. As a mom of two, that peace of mind is the whole game. When Addison and I filmed our mom and daughter try on haul, that coverage was the first thing both of us noticed.
Here is the part no swimwear review talks about honestly. When you shop for a midsize suit at most stores, an XL is not really an XL. Target is a big offender. You get the suit home, put it on, and it restricts and pinches in ways that feel almost punishing. It cuts across your ribs. It digs into your hips. It shifts your stomach into odd rolls that were not there before you put it on.
I get it because I have lived it. It can take forever, sometimes the whole year, to find one suit that works, maybe two if you are lucky. You sit in the Target fitting room getting hot and sweaty, the fabric rolling and sticking, and after a while you do not even want to try anything else on. It kills the mood. You saw something really cute, told yourself you would just size up and it would be fine, and then it was not, and you walked out feeling worse than when you came in because it did not even sit the way you thought it would. If you have been hunting for swimsuits for moms, swimsuits for mom body, or swimwear for apron tummy and felt that exact defeat, you are who I am writing this for.
It did not feel that way at all with Nani. Their fabric does not do that. It fits more like well made shapewear. It molds to your body without squeezing, and it holds where it needs to hold. On my body, that meant it smoothed the outer edges of my hips (those weird pockets I mentioned) without pressing my stomach forward into busted can of biscuits territory. That balance is the whole reason a two piece finally worked on me. Use code SALTYVAGABONDS15 for 15% off at naniswimwear.com.
The Flat Rib material specifically is stretchy, thick, and forgiving. It is the kind of fabric I would happily wear all day at the beach without needing to escape into a coverup by lunchtime.
For context, I am a size 14 with wide hips, an apron tummy, and the surgical history I mentioned above. I sized into XL for every piece here. Here is how each set fit.
This is the set I go into full detail on in my original Nani Swimwear review. The short version: the one shoulder crop has a longer band under the bust that finally made a two piece feel flattering instead of fussy on my body.
Here is why that band mattered so much to me specifically. I am on a GLP-1 journey right now, and the weight is coming off in weird ways. One of my issues is a pocket of fat right under my bust that does not sit flat, the kind of thing you notice when you wear a bra. I intentionally chose a two piece because these bands looked longer, and I figured a longer band would smooth that area down. Usually when a suit smushes that down you get spillover somewhere else, the muffin top situation. This one does not. The band is long enough to cover and smooth that spot, and honestly tank style tops are coming back in anyway, so it fit the whole vibe. I am so glad I took the chance, because these are suits I am actually going to wear out.
The yoga pocket bottom leans slightly athleisure in vibe, with patented pockets that Nani actually holds US design patents on. Not a gimmick. A real place to tuck a key or a phone at the beach. If you have been searching for the best two piece swimsuits for moms or 2 piece swimsuits for moms with a real belly, this is the set that changed my mind on two pieces entirely.

I paired the reversible Cardinal midkini top with the Poppy tied up bottom, and this is where Nani earns their travel loyalty. The midkini is reversible four ways, so one top plus this bottom already gives you multiple photo outfits that stay in the same color palette. The tied up bottom lets you adjust the coverage on the sides, which is useful when your hips fluctuate through the day. The tie is functional, not just decorative.
The cut back crop gives more coverage on top, closer to a women’s cropped rashguard vibe, without the sleeves. Great if you are self conscious about the ribcage or want a little more back coverage, and the cut back detail keeps it from feeling frumpy. Paired with the colorblock bottom it makes a clean matching set, or you can mix and match either piece with the Cardinal or Beach Break pieces for a completely different look. This is where the coordinating color palette strategy pays off in real life.
Addison wore the two Stevie one pieces in our try on video so you could see how Nani fits a different body type than mine, and how the one piece side of the line compares to the bikinis. I tried both of them on myself too, off camera, so my notes here come from wearing them, not just watching.
Honest take: the one pieces are nice, but they were not the showstopper for me the way the bikinis were. The fabric feels different and a little elevated, but the cut itself fits like a pretty standard cup shelf one piece. I have been buying basic Amazon one pieces with a built in shelf for a while and those have fit me just fine, and these fit in that same familiar way. That is not a knock, it just means if you already know your one piece size, you will know your Nani one piece size. Where they shine is the matching, since they coordinate with the rest of the line and with Nani’s shorts.
The Vera Stevie is a smooth, classic one piece with a softer drape than the structured Flat Rib bikinis. It held its shape well and laid flat without gapping or sagging. For anyone searching Nani Swimwear Vera Stevie One Piece Swimsuit, it fits true to size and looks clean and flattering.
The Rye Stevie is cut from the same Stevie fabric with a slightly different silhouette. Same story on fit: true to size, holds shape, no gapping. If you want the coverage of a one piece with the recycled, no-photoshop ethos of the brand, either Stevie is a safe pick.
A quick word on building a swim wardrobe that ages well, especially if you are a mom photographing family vacations you want to look back on ten years from now.
Solids photograph timeless. Loud, of the moment prints date your vacation photos within a season. If you want photos from this trip to still look great five years out, buy solids. Nani has plenty of solid options across the line, in colors that read expensive on camera and travel well from beach to boat to beach club. That said, the louder print-forward suits in the collection lean outdoorsy in vibe. That is not my personal aesthetic. I lean more girly, more solids, more resort. But if you love a bold print or you want your swimwear to feel fun and adventurous, Nani has those too. Just know what you are buying it for.
I styled a few of the pieces in my photos with a long, oversized button down blouse thrown over top. It is one of my favorite ways to make a swimsuit read as an outfit, especially for beach club days or lunch after the pool. If you are building cute beach outfits or vacation outfit ideas around a suit instead of just buying the suit alone, this is the trick that makes beach day outfits look intentional.
The reversible pieces plus Nani’s tight color palette mean you can pack a few Nani items and get several different looks out of them. Every photo looks intentional. Every outfit reads styled instead of accidental. For a two week trip, that is the difference between checking an extra bag and traveling in a carry on. Whether you are planning island vacation outfits, Florida vacation outfits, or just cute vacation outfits for your next tropical trip, a coordinated Nani set does a lot of the styling work for you.
If you are not confident showing your legs in a bikini bottom yet, Nani makes matching swim shorts that pair with several of their sets. They have an adjustable belt, which means you can wear them hiking, over the swimsuit, straight into a beach day, and back out again.
The same goes for arms. If that is the area you would rather cover, Nani has really cute matching rash guards that coordinate with the line, so you get coverage up top without giving up the pulled together look. Between the shorts and the rash guards, you can build a suit around whatever you actually want covered.
This is the piece that makes Nani genuinely useful for the active traveler. You are not switching outfits three times a day. You are wearing one set with functional layers that work for hikes, waterfalls, beaches, and the walk back to the car.
If you are hesitant to order online, Nani sells in person at REI and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Try on their fit before committing.
That said, and I mean this honestly, the online collection at naniswimwear.com has significantly cuter prints and a wider selection than what you will find in stores. Use the in-store try on to confirm your size, then come home and order the print you actually want online with our discount code for 15% off.
Our discount code takes 15% off at naniswimwear.com. It stacks on any active sale. It does not expire. It works whether you shop through my ShopMy shelf, my LTK, or by typing the code directly into Nani’s checkout.
Quick note on the military angle, because people search for it. Nani does not currently run an official military or first responder discount that I have found. So to be clear, this is not a verified military discount from the brand. It is my discount, from one veteran to you. I am a retired veteran, and this is the code I share with my community. Whether you are military, a first responder, or just a mom looking for a Nani discount code, it works the same for everyone and it is the best public savings on the brand right now.
That is the whole idea behind what I do here. When you want a real code for the cute stuff, the good brands, not just some generic retailer coupon, this is the place. I am an actual creator using these products, so the codes you find at Salty Vagabonds are the real ones for the brands worth buying.
Which Nani suits are best for midsize bodies?
Honestly, any of them can work for a midsize body. It comes down to what you feel most confident in. If you are worried about your legs, go with a two piece or one piece paired with their matching shorts. If you are worried about your arms, wear a regular suit with one of their matching rash guards. For me, my concerns were my hips and the area under my bra, so I looked for pieces that covered and smoothed there, and I do not care much about my arms or legs. Other women feel the opposite, and that is the point. Nani has so many styles and the mix and match is awesome, so just give them a try. Most of their suits do well across whatever areas you want covered, and you will almost certainly find something in the line that fits your body and your comfort level.
Yes. I wear a size 14 in most brands and Nani’s XL fits accurately across the crops and bottoms.
Yes. Addison wore both the Vera Stevie and the Rye Stevie in the video, and I also tried them both on myself off camera. In both cases they fit true to size, held their shape, and laid flat without gapping.
Flat Rib is a thicker, structured, ribbed fabric that reads more athletic and holds its shape aggressively. Stevie is a smoother, more classic swim fabric with a softer drape. Both are made from recycled materials.
Yes. They come with an adjustable belt, which makes them useful for anything from short beach walks to full hikes.
REI and Dick’s Sporting Goods carry Nani in select stores. The online collection at naniswimwear.com has more prints and colors than what you will see in person.
Yes. It stacks on top of any active sale at naniswimwear.com.
Yes. Their color palette, coverage, and coordinating pieces make them great for Hawaii, the Caribbean, Bora Bora, Mexico, and any beach destination where you want to travel light and still look pulled together in every photo.
If you have been searching for a swimsuit that lets you feel feminine again while functioning as a mom, a traveler, or a woman whose body has been through something, this is the line I would send you to first. The fabric is honest. The coverage is real. The pockets are patented. The mom and daughter test held up across two body types. And our discount code holds year round.
Read my original Nani Swimwear review for the full brand deep dive, and stay tuned for our Mommy and Me Nani Swimwear post coming soon. Nani has a mommy and me line, so I picked out a matching suit for me and my youngest, Audrey, who is 11, and we have a whole batch of matching collections coming. Mommy and me swim is having a real moment for travel families right now, so if that is your vibe, keep an eye out.
