Disney cruise door decorations were on our radar and are a huge part of the fun, excitement and magic onboard. They let your kids express who there favorite princess, villains and cartoon characters are. And after a long exhausting day, everyone can find the cabin door if you are half asleep. Lets dig into What you can decorate, what you can’t, and why magnets matter and which boats have a $100 fee for damage.
There are lots of ways to decorate a room and a door. We saw some people decorating the inside with various items like themed curtains, more magnets and courier style decorations. Pretty much anything from hobby lobby that is a form of decoration you may find on your cruise. But lets go over the official or not so official rules when decorating.
If you have never cruised with Disney or any other cruise ship that allows decorating then all of this may be a surprise to you like it was us. We are not knew to being crafty and decorating for birthdays, holidays and any other reason to have a party.
Disney Cruise Line allows door decorating, it’s part of the fun, but you must follow their safety guidelines and some might surprise you:

So we didn’t have wooden doors on the Wonder so we didn’t have to worry about this specific item. But I am here to save the day for y’all that want that concierge experience and want to decorate the doors too. And unfortunately you can’t eat your cake and ice cream too while having the top tier experience on the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy.
And after finding this question asked and answered here is the quote from Disney Cruise Line below
“To ensure an enjoyable cruise experience for all our Guests, we ask that you take note of the following guidelines for decorating your stateroom door. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
You are welcome to place magnetic signs on your stateroom door. Though, please note that Concierge staterooms on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have wooden doors. You may not affix items to your stateroom doors using tape or any adhesive, including removable gel adhesives, as this can damage the doors’ finish.
Also, using over-the-door hanging organizers is prohibited, as they can scratch and/or disfigure stateroom doors and trim.
Guests who damage doors in violation of these guidelines will be assessed a $100 fee per incident to cover the cost of repairs.
Please also note that items of value should not be used to decorate your stateroom door. Disney Cruise Line is not responsible for damage to or loss of these items.”
But you can decorate the inside of your room to your hearts content with magnets inside your state room. And don’t forget about your fish extender, we walk past some really cute ones that were customized.
We were surprised that there was enough room for 4 people in the room we did get. We are not knew to small hotel rooms at all, cough Japan cough, so if you are surprised that there will be room for decorations, there truly is.
We saw them not only on the doors but the stateroom number plaque also known as (aka) “fish extender” spot. We went with a more minimal aerial theme because it’s cute and different. And we could leave it behind for our cabin stewardess for there keeping or being able to pass it along to the next kids.
A note to keep in mind is that these ships have metal doors:
Regular (non-Concierge) stateroom doors are metal on:
One important thing to know is that not all Disney cruise ship hallways are the same. On some ships and decks, the stateroom doors and surrounding walls are metal, which makes magnets the easiest option. On others, like the stateroom we had on the Disney Wonder, the hallway walls are wood-paneled, so magnets won’t work everywhere.
Also don’t forget to look up. Some staterooms, especially those at the end of hallways with extra wall space, have ceilings or trim areas where guests get creative with lightweight hanging signs. We saw families proudly displaying how many Disney cruises they’ve done, and honestly, some of those displays were next level. It’s impressive, a little wild, and very on-brand for Disney Cruise Line regulars.
IMPORTANT: Inside walls are magnetic, great for DIYs. You really can transform the state room in a major way if you desire.
Pro tip: bring slightly extra because the rooms can be small but they do hold and have more space than you would think. The opportunity to decorate is more than you would think.
We got to see so many decorations and some were really cute and some were inspiring us to do more next time. We did see a lot of classic characters on the doors like mickey and Minnie style doors along with Goofy. Some of the themes that stuck out was the haunted mansion and lilo and stitch.
Some of the most used decoration we did see are the classics. You know the classics, its the videos you grew up with as a kid and i have a short list below:
We got to see the deep rooted love people have while sailing on Disney boats. They have custom name plates and usually with the sailing ship and dates. People love showing there love and what cruises they have been on.
They also have custom magnets made with Character-themed family sets like Lilo, Stictch, Maui and Heihei. Other themes we saw were little Mermaid.
And if a disney door theme is not an idea you are interested in you can always do Pixar or a special occasion idea. We got to see a few of these on board. We saw plenty of birthday and an anniversary/just married decorated door.
You really dont know what you will find because everyone does there own thing. It’s worth a walk one day or maybe two to see all of the doors. And we did get off before Halloween but I hear they decorate with Halloween on the High Seas magnets and during the holidays they do Very Merrytime cruise Christmas magnets.
And if Pixar is more of your style you aren’t left out either. You can get tons of Pixar and Star Wars magnets. Some of the themes we saw on our ship included:
The best things in life are sometimes free. Disney Cruise Line does offer some free Disney offical art for you to print for free. And its actually pretty cool, it has 37 pages of classic Disney art including Mickey and Minnie and Donald Duck and Pluto.
If you are using magnet tape its best to lay it flat days in advanced so it can flatten and get the curl out of it. And a book can help with this too. We printed on regular paper but if you want to use the same decorations for say the home or next cruise have them laminated for better durability.
And laminating them will help them keep from getting soggy from the humidity while on the ocean. Our cruise didn’t feel that humid because it was a transition and the Pacific Ocean wasn’t that warm just yet. But if you are cruising in the summer in the carrribbean, the in protected paper might not even make it through the week, it will get soggy.
If you’re crafty or love doing digital art, DIY Disney cruise door decorations are one of the easiest ways to create something totally unique without spending a ton of money. This is also a great option if you want custom Disney door signs that no one else on your sailing will have.
You can design your own artwork, character-inspired graphics, or family-themed signs, then print, laminate, and reuse them for future cruises. We love this route because it lets you personalize your door while keeping things lightweight and travel-friendly.
Some popular DIY Disney door sign ideas include:
Once laminated, your designs hold up really well in cruise hallways and can be reused again and again.
You don’t need a fancy craft room or expensive supplies to make great Disney cruise door decorations. Most of what you need is inexpensive and easy to find:
If you don’t own a printer, local print shops or big-box stores can print and laminate designs very affordably. Many families also reuse magnets from previous cruises or holiday decor, which keeps costs even lower.
DIY Disney door decorations are perfect if you want something personal, budget-friendly, and fun to create with your kids before the trip. It’s one of those small projects that builds excitement before sailing and makes your stateroom feel a little more like home once you’re onboard.
If you’re planning a Disney cruise during a holiday or seasonal sailing, decorating your stateroom door is such a fun way to lean into the magic. Disney cruises celebrate seasons really well onboard, and your door decor is an easy way to join in without doing anything over the top.
Holiday-themed doors are especially popular on sailings that fall around Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, or even spring break. You’ll see everything from subtle seasonal touches to full-blown themed displays as you walk the hallways, and it instantly adds to the festive atmosphere.
Some easy seasonal ideas that work well on Disney Cruise Line:
Seasonal door decorations are also great conversation starters, especially if you’re cruising during a longer itinerary or repositioning cruise. Kids love spotting themed doors, and we noticed cast members often commented on creative or festive designs as well.
Pro tip: Seasonal magnets are one of the easiest options because they’re reusable, lightweight, and quick to put up and take down. If you cruise more than once, you can rotate the same decorations year after year depending on the sailing.
If you’re cruising during a holiday, this is one of those small extras that takes almost no effort but makes your Disney cruise feel even more special.
Yes! They are allowed but make sure they are magnetic, we did this wrong at first and got gifted some magnetic tape where its sticky on one side and a magnet on the other.
Disney dream and Disney fantasy, but only the concierge level rooms.
Yes and no! concierge level state room on the Disney dream and Disney fantasy the magnets will not work, they have wooden doors.
Yes, you can bring things with you that are “free”.
Yes, we printed things out used magnet tape or you can use magnet adhesive strips.
The door might be slightly narrower than a regular door in your house, so plan for decorations to fit that size. And the bathroom doors were even narrower than the main entrance door.
We saw a few doors with lights, but they were battery operated with small AAA or AA batteries. Lights that require to be plugged in are not allowed.
Yes! They can be counted as a decoration and people make them fancy with cute fabrics and something specific to their family like possibly where they live or the type of race/culture they are.

Yes I suggest you decorate your door but do it however you want. We see a lot of the same decorations so if you want to stand out a little bit of planning does go a long way and makes you stand out more than others. And it’s a way to start your Disney cruise off with a bang especially if you have kids.
And if you have younger kids it will help them find the state room more easily. Because a hallway of the same looking door and aesthetic can feel like a never ending maze to kids if there is no door expressing to them that this one is mine.
And dont forget to follow the rules, that 100 dollar fee will come as a surprise that no one wants too see at the end or during the cruise. And if multiple transactions happen, decorating your door will add up quick.
