First on the list is the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and let me tell you, this place is a must for families. The big draw? The tunnel that lets you walk through the middle of the aquarium with sharks, rays, and other sea creatures swimming all around you. It’s like stepping into an underwater world, and trust me, the kids will be absolutely mesmerized. The aquarium is well-laid-out, easy to navigate with a stroller, and offers plenty of interactive exhibits to keep little ones entertained. It’s one of the best aquariums around where you can learn a lot about the Pacific Coast sea animals throughout the Pacific North West. You can check out the Oregon Coast Aquarium‘s socials here: Facebook or Instagram
Next up, you can’t visit Newport without meeting its loudest residents the sea lions! Head over to the Newport Sea Lion Docks, where you’ll find a whole gang of these playful animals barking, swimming, and lounging around. The dock is easy to access and offers a safe viewing spot for kids to get close (but not too close) to these hilarious creatures. Bring a camera, these guys love to put on a show! You can also check out their live webcam here and wave to the camera.
For a bit of history and some seriously stunning views, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a must-see. This iconic lighthouse is perched on a bluff with panoramic ocean views, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. But the real secret is the hidden beach nearby. It’s a bit of a walk, so pack some snacks and be ready for a little adventure. Once you’re there, you’ll find tide pools teeming with marine life, perfect for kids who love to explore. It’s best to check out during low tide when the rock formations peak out a bit. Don’t forget to bring some water shoes and a change of clothes. Those tide pools can get slippery, and kids will want to splash around!
If you decide not to walk to the beach below there’s still plenty to check out from the Yaquina Head outstanding natural area. You’ll see boats passing by, harbor seals and sea otters scattered variously throughout the surrounding areas. It’s a popular attraction and you’re sure to see something memorable while here.
If you’re looking for a spot to relax and grab a bite, Rogue Public House is a fantastic choice. Now, I know what you’re thinking…brewery with kids? But Rogue is super family-friendly, with a laid-back vibe and a menu that’ll please everyone. Their famous black burgers are a must-try, and there are plenty of non-alcoholic options for the kids. The staff is always welcoming to families and they seriously had some of the best food. If the kids get antsy it‘s easy to get up and walk the Fishing Pier. There’s also two little mini beautiful beaches that your kids can run around in while you wait for food to arrive.
The Port of Newport Public Fishing Pier offers a mix of stunning views and local culture. This is where you’ll catch a glimpse of the iconic Newport Yaquina Bay bridge and maybe even see locals hauling in their crab catch. It’s a great spot for a family walk, and the kids will love seeing the fishermen in action. If you’re up for it, try your hand at crabbing! Just be sure to pack some snacks and warm clothes, it can get chilly by the water depending on the time of year you’re visiting.
Take a stroll down Bay Boulevard, the heart of Newport’s historic bayfront. This little fishing village is packed with quirky shops, cool street art, and plenty of spots to grab something to eat. We loved stopping at Femme Fatale, a boutique that’s full of unique finds. The kids will enjoy peeking into the shop windows, and there’s something fun to see around every corner. This area is easy to navigate on foot, but if you’ve got littles, a stroller might be handy.
If you plan to stop at this boutique be warned that it is a little spooky. It’s total Halloween vibes, dark and represents all things taboo. It was one of the best places to check out for our kids.
End your Newport adventure with a visit to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! This quirky attraction is a hit with kids and adults alike, full of oddities and interactive exhibits that’ll have your littlest ones saying “wow” at every turn. It’s an indoor activity, so it’s perfect for rainy days or if you just need a break from the outdoors. Expect lots of giggles and a few gasps as you explore the strange and unbelievable together.
Aquarium Village is a bit of a hidden gem and perfect for kids who love animals and adventure. The village has a little bit of everything, from a petting zoo where kids can get up close with animals to Pirates Plunder, a pirate-themed store that feels like a treasure hunt. It’s a fun, low-key stop that’s great for breaking up the day and letting the kids burn off some energy. It’s also a great spot for souvenir shopping. It’s litteraly packed with fun gift shops! Pirate hats, anyone?
Yaquina Bay State Park Beach is where you’ll find peace, quiet, and some seriously beautiful scenery. This beach is perfect for a relaxed family day. The sandy shores are ideal for building sandcastles. The sand here formed huge bowels to explore in and some funky sand formations. Our kids loved running and jumping around here. The lighthouse in the distance makes for some great photo ops, too.
Finally, no trip to Newport is complete without a meal at Local Ocean Seafoods. This restaurant has the best seafood around and is a local favorite. The seafood restaurants in the area are known for fresh, ocean-to-table dishes. The po’boy sandwiches are to die for, and there are plenty of kid-friendly options on the menu as well. The atmosphere is casual, and the staff is super accommodating to families. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your Newport adventure with a delicious meal everyone will enjoy.
After you’re done eating go walk the docks next door. Here you’ll see one of the largest commercial fishing fleets in the Pacific North West. You’ll also likely see more harbor seals, various species of jelly fish and tons of fish floating by the docks. It’s one of the best ways to keep the kids entertained for free.
For a bit of natural wonder, take the kids to see Devil’s Punch Bowl, a stunning rock formation that creates a swirling, foamy cauldron when the tide is right. This spot is both thrilling and educational. It’s a great place to teach kids about the power of the ocean while they watch the waves crash into the bowl. The area around it has picnic tables and some trails, making it a good spot to let the kids run around while you take in the view. Just make sure to keep a close eye on little ones, as the cliffs can be steep.
So, whether you’re planning a quick summer vacation stop or a longer stay, Newport, Oregon, is packed with family-friendly activities that are sure to create lasting memories. Newport quickly became a favorite destination for us and if you’re planning to drive the Oregon coast, add this stop to your itinerary.
